Biography

Lysbeth “Libby” Kaye Stone, 84, passed away peacefully in the Santa Fe home she loved on June 26, 2016. Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Libby graduated from Smith College in 1953, then met her husband (the late great George Stone) when they both worked at Bloomingdale's in New York City. They were married in 1955 and soon moved to Houston, where they raised three daughters. They retired to Santa Fe in 1991.
The younger of two children born to Emby and Aline Kaye, Libby was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her brother, Lieutenant Colonel, retired, E. Donald Kaye of Santa Fe; daughters Karen Stone Mickool (Ed) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Susan Stone Woodard (Rex) of Bowling Green, KY, Cindy Stone Murphy (Brian) of Santa Fe, and "fourth daughter" Margaret Mechling Long (John) of New Orleans, LA. She is also survived by cousins Alyce Frank of Arroyo Hondo, NM, and Charles Kahn of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren Emily Aline Stewart, Allison June Woodard, and George Dane Woodard (Monica); and numerous other nieces, nephews, loved ones and friends.
Libby was an avid reader, so passionate about books that she returned to Sam Houston State University in the early 1980s to earn a Master’s in Library Science. She loved serving as a school librarian in Houston and continued to volunteer in the Santa Fe schools. She implemented a book distribution program for several local schools ensuring that thousands of underprivileged students experienced the joy of owning their own books. Libby’s program was later adopted by “Reading is Fundamental”, where it lives on.”
Libby also served on boards for the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, The College of Santa Fe, and the Smith College Alumnae Association, serving several times as a Class Officer and as Co-Chair for her 50th reunion.
She and George traveled the world together and developed many enduring friendships.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 9, at 3 pm in the Chaco Room at the Inn at Loretto, Santa Fe. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your favorite library or literacy program for children.
