Biography

THOMAS CARROLL ALLEN
Our loving and beloved Thom, 61, peacefully slipped away at dawn on the 4th of July 2012. The holiday is special to the family and always joyfully celebrated both for the nation's and his mother's birth.
Thom grew up on the shore of Puget Sound, fishing, digging clams and swimming. At the age of 4 he persuaded his father to let him have an old rowboat-his proudest possession- to explore the cove in front of their home. After attending high school at Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, WA, he graduated from the University of Washington. With his wife Ouida MacGregor, he transformed an old commune on Manhattan Avenue, literally by hand, into El Paradero Bed and Breakfast Inn. They ran the Inn for 23 years, creating a nurturing and welcoming environment. Here he made many friends who returned year after year and became part of his extended family. It was Thom's shy nature to serve others selflessly and with love. He collected a large, dedicated "family" of friends, neighbors and colleagues who will truly miss this steady, loving man. He lived up to being the man his dogs believed him to be. As one of the founders of the NM Bed and Breakfast Association, he served as its president for many years as the industry grew and assisted in writing the NM State B and B regulations. As a general contractor he and Ouida developed El Camarico Subdivision. Thom was predeceased by his mother and father, Betsey and Charles Allen of Gig Harbor, WA.
He is survived by his wife, Ouida, son, Spencer Martin and wife, Martha Dummer of Santa Fe; daughter, Amy Page and husband, Macario Page; granddaughters Ashley, Alicia and Rebekah Page of Moriarty; his brother, Charles Allen and wife, Anne Strong, nieces Mary and Gwei, nephew Chip Allen of Cambridge, MA, niece Catherine Nachbar of Duluth, MN as well as grand nieces and nephews, beloved friends and his dear Paddyboy. A compassionate, patient and dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he will be deeply missed.
A memorial service and reception was held at Temple Beth Shalom, 205 E. Barcelona at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday July 31st.
Donations to the SF Animal Shelter, ACLU, PMS Hospice or Coming Home Connection in Thom's name would be appropriate.
